Disney Channel Officially Cancels ‘Girl Meets World’

The Disney Channel spin-off of the Boy Meets World series Girl Meets World starring Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter has officially been cancelled, according to Disney Channel.

The announcement comes just a few weeks after Rider Strong – a cast member from Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World – said in a podcast that the show had ended.

After three seasons, Disney will air the show’s very final episode on January 20. Titled “Girl Meets Goodbye,” the network has said that the finale will be about the Matthews family making “a life-changing decision.” We’ll have to say goodbye to Riley Matthews, her little brother Auggie; parents, Cory and Topanga; and BFFs Maya, Lucas, and Farkle.

In a statement, the network added that they “are proud that for over 70 episodes, Michael Jacobs, April Kelly and the talented creative team, cast and crew entertained viewers with an authentic and heartfelt look at navigating adolescence.” It may be bittersweet to think about this, but fans can expect a reunion from OG stars Rider Strong, Ben Savage, William Daniels, Anthony Tyler Quinn, Betsy Randle, Lee Norris, Will Friedle, Danny McNulty, and William.

The GMW writers also spoke.

After the official announcement, Blanchard went on Twitter and posted an emotional response to the cancellation. Read her full post here.

“I have tried to go in and write this many times, in preparation for this moment I feared might come,” she writes. “Being on Girl Meets World is the most significant event in my life thus far. It changed absolutely every aspect of it, and takes up most of the life I am able to remember.”
